Be sure to have enough gifts to complete the tournament. Also, don't rely on your opponent, make sure to keep the ability to open gifts as well (don't open other gifts the day of the tournament).
There will be four tournaments with 128 trainers in Phase 2, so the total number of trainers advancing from Phase 1 is 512 (+ the winners who advance directly to Phase 3). The number of trainers advancing to Phase 2 from each tournament depends on the number of participants - the larger the tournament, the more trainers go through. This is why we don't know in advance where is the cutoff for each Phase 1 tournament. Try to place as high as you can in your tournament and please wait until all Sunday tournaments are completed to find out if you made it to Phase 2 or not!
