Arena Update

Jul 27, 2020: GO Battle League S3 Update and Move Rebalance!

GO Battle League Season 3 starts, and Niantic has made quite a few move updates to go with it! (Read the full blog post here). Join us now as we break down the important changes to move stats, Pokémon move pools, and the upcoming GO Battle League season!

1. Updates to Existing Moves

  • Infestation generates 12 energy, from the previous 11. Beedrill, Drapion, and Venemoth will all enjoy this buff!
  • Hex gets the same buff, now generating 12 energy. You’ll see this help Dusclops, Alolan Marowak, Drifblim, and Chandelure.
  • Powder Snow deals 5 damage instead of 4. This helps Mamoswine, Sealeo, Snowy Castform, and Alolan Sandslash hit just a bit harder!
  • Drill Peck now deals 65 damage from the previous 60. This benefits Zapdos in Great and Ultra Leagues, which has not seen much play yet.
  • Brave Bird now hits harder, with increased damage from 90 to 130. However, it also drops your defense stat by 3 stages. This gives Flying Pokémon like Skarmory, Braviary, Ho-Oh, Pidgeot, and Blaziken access to a strong Flying type move.
  • Blizzard’s damage has increased from 130 to 140. This will help some of the bulkier Pokémon, like Regice and Empoleon, that can charge up the energy use this move to secure more KOs in battle!
  • Flash Cannon now requires 70 energy instead of its previous 65. This acts as a slight nerf in certain matchups for Registeel and Skarmory.
  • Focus Blast’s damage has decreased from 150 to 140, making it another slight nerf for Registeel.
  • Moonblast’s energy and damage stats have stayed the same, but the chance to lower your opponent’s attack stat has deceased from 30% to 10%, making the de-buff less common.

2. Moveset Updates

Braviary
Close Combat
Braviary gains a strong charged attack that is super-effective against Rock and Steel types, it’s main counters.
Abomasnow
Ice Weather Ball
The addition of a low-energy STAB Charged Attack gives Abomasnow a lot more wins in the Great League.
Pelipper
Water Weather Ball
This is a huge buff for Pelipper, finally giving it a move to bait shields, especially in the Great League.
Empoleon
Drill Peck
Drill Peck gives Empoleon an additional niche, giving a cheaper Charged Attack than Hydro Canon, and also allowing it to hit Fighting-types for super-effective damage.

GO Battle League Season 3
It looks like Season 3 will be full of new themes and ideas, whilst still maintaining a few familiar aspects. With two new cups, reduced friendship requirements for battles, and some changes to rewards, it is shaping up to be an interesting Season!

1. Season 3 Schedule and New Cups!

The new season of GO Battle League will begin on Monday, July 27th, 2020 at 1:00 pm PDT and end on Monday, September 14th, 2020, at 1:00 pm PDT.

We will see a return of the Premier Cup in Master League, but with the addition of two new themed cups. Much like Silph Arena Cups, there will be restrictions on the available Pokémon you can bring to battle. The first is the Ultra League Premier Cup, with the details as follows:

  • Pokémon CP limited to 2500
  • No Legendary or Mythical Pokémon

The second themed cup will be the Flying Cup, where only Flying-type Pokémon will be allowed to compete! More details will be released soon, so expect more information and analysis to come about these new formats!

2. Similarities between Season 2 and 3

Just like with Season 2, there will not be a walking requirement in order to battle in the GO Battle League. Also, QR code scanning and the lowered Friendship requirements for remote battling will stay throughout Season 3, allowing anyone to battle remotely until at least mid-September. The number of battles, wins, and overall ratings required to reach ranks will remain the same as well.

3. New changes coming to GO Battle League!

Season 3 will be making some important changes to the way battlers will take part and be rewarded.

  • The Battle Until You Win feature will be removed for Season 3, meaning your set will end after 5 battles, even if you do not win any of them.
  • For Premium Rewards, you’ll now earn Rare Candies after your fourth win. However, the number of Rare Candies has reduced from 8 to 6.
  • You’ll now see the following as guaranteed reward encounters:
    • Pidgeot starting at rank 1
    • Galarian Zigzagoon starting at rank 4
    • Galarian Farfetch’d starting at rank 7
    • Rufflet starting at rank 8
    • Scraggy starting at rank 9
    • A new avatar item and pose will be awarded at rank 10
  • Finishing at rank 7 or higher will award an Elite Charged TM rather than an Elite Fast TM.
  • All other end-of-season-rewards will remain the same as Season 2.

We’re excited to see these new changes come into play throughout GO Battle League Season 3, and in future Arena tournaments! With the PvP landscape always shifting, you never know which Pokémon you’ll see rise to the top. No matter what your PvP goals are, these updates will surely keep you on your toes!
